WHAT IS BUDDHA? HOW DOES BUDDHA PRACTICE IN LIFE? Buddhism originated in India and dates back more than 2500 years. In English, Buddhism is used with the noun "Buddhism" - meaning a religion built on the basis of the teachings of the Buddha. However, in South Asia or Southeast Asia, the word "Budda - Sasana" is used - meaning the teaching of the Buddha (Buddhist Dharma, Buddhism). Today, we talk about Buddhism all the time and almost everyone knows the phrase "Nam-Mo-A-Di-Da". But what exactly is Buddhism? How is it defined? This is a very difficult question to answer. Let's "unpack" this question through the following summary! What is Buddhism? What is the definition of Buddhism? In Vietnamese, the word "Buddha" is transliterated as "Buddha" or "Buddha". This is not a proper name. According to the explanation, Buddha/Buddha is understood as an enlightened person, one who is awakened, one who is completely liberated, one who is freed from samsara. Turning over the ancient records, the Buddha's personal name is Siddhartha Gautama. But few people know or use this name, so they often call him Buddha. More than 2,500 years ago, the 35-year-old Buddha attained enlightenment on his own and after nearly two hundred and fifty years of his nirvana, Buddhism became a popular religion in the world. There are many views that Buddhism is not only encapsulated in the category of a religion but also as a philosophy. Or there is the view that Buddhism is not considered to be philosophy at all because Buddhism emphasizes practice while philosophy does not. Or there is the view that Buddhism is something that transcends both philosophy and religion. There are many other terms that are often mentioned about Buddhism, which are: Buddhist science, Buddhist philosophy or Buddhist ethics. These terms were mentioned by the 14th Dalai Lama (Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and the outstanding representative of Buddhism today in the world - according to wikipedia). Goals of Buddhism During his life, the Buddha spent most of his life teaching the means (hows) for beings to realize what he had realized so that all could become become enlightened Buddhas. The widespread spread of Buddhism also created a diversity in the form and content of the rituals and practices. This will be corresponded by each different culture in the world. However, despite such diversity, Buddhism everywhere considers the Four Noble Truths as the basic teaching - the core of the religion. The Truth of Suffering: Referring to the sufferings of all living beings that are birth - old age - illness - death, which is the suffering born of greed - anger - delusion - doubt. The Truth: Explaining the cause of suffering is derived from craving - human desire. The Truth of Cessation: Refers to the way to eliminate suffering that is to destroy the source of craving. The Noble Truth: Refers to the truth of the practice of the Eightfold Path – the 8 paths to freedom from suffering. What is Buddhism? Enlightenment and liberation are the core goals mentioned in Buddhist teachings. Buddha himself is also human, but thanks to his enlightenment, having seen through the reality of how we exist, completely overcoming our shortcomings and realizing our potential, he used good directions. to show sentient beings the way to escape suffering, to cultivate and develop compassion and wisdom. Buddhism is not simply preserved in the scriptures, so it requires practitioners to both study and practice in parallel to truly realize the Way. Buddhism is also not encapsulated in any system of faith or worship, does not require a blind belief, but to be proven, must be based on wisdom. The Buddha taught: "The Tathagata is only a guide, each person has to go on his own, no one can go in place of another". Saying that to understand, "liberation" in Buddhism is not praying to the Buddha to help our difficulties and sufferings disappear (or many people still say going to the Buddha's door to repent). But it's not us, by really practicing the 8 liberation paths to get rid of our own afflictions, awakening our own wisdom, inner self, and compassion. It is only through self-practice that leads to realization and liberation. This content is once again emphasized in the Ahammatha Sutra, where the Buddha taught: "Teachers, light your own torch, light it with the Dharma, don't light it with any other dharma. . Be your own refuge, take refuge in the true dharma, do not rely on any other dharma.” How to practice Buddhism in life? It is not enough to understand the meaning and purpose of Buddhism, to believe in its teachings, but to practice it all the time in life. First of all, the Buddha taught us about the way to be a human being, to always do good, to avoid doing evil, to bring joy and happiness to ourselves, and then towards family, relatives and society. To do so, we need to keep the three karmas of body, mouth, and mind pure. not doing evil, capable of doing good. That is: Do not generate thoughts, words or actions that may harm others now and in the future. Thinking in accordance with reason, without greed, selfishness, anger, delusion, jealousy, envy, self-satisfaction. Do righteous things for yourself and for others, so that everyone can be happy and happy in the present. What is Buddhism? Buddhism does not force Buddhists to do things they cannot do yet, but have genuine faith in the Buddha's teachings and try to practice the above basic things, avoid evil, do good, and do not harm themselves. and others is the important thing in practicing Buddhism in life. Applying the Buddha's teachings to daily life is "sowing seeds" for the future. If sentient beings want to be reborn as a human, they need to practice taking refuge in the Three Jewels and the Five Virtues. Since humans want to be reborn in the heavenly realms, it is necessary to practice the 10 good deeds and the levels of meditation.
