As he was lead through Kapilavatthu, the capital, Siddhartha gained the chanced to see a couple of old men who had accidentally wandered near the route he was taken on. Confused, he chased after them to find out what they were. Then he came across some people who were severely ill. And finally, he came across a funeral ceremony by the side of a river, and for the first time in his life saw death. At this time Siddhartha saw the four sights he was never to forget, an old man, sick man, dead man, and an ascetic monk. These four sight pushed him to reflect on the idea of suffering, death, the meaning of life, and the ultimate fate of man.
At the age of 29, Siddhartha came to realize that he could not be happy living as he had been. He had discovered suffering, and wanted to discover how one might overcome suffering. Siddhartha felt as though his life was not fufilled unless he gained answers to all of his questions. One night after kissing his sleeping wife and newborn son Rahula goodbye, he snuck out of the palace. He gave away his rich clothing, and cut his long hair. He studied for a while with two famous gurus of the time, but soon found their practices lacking in what he was searching for.
He then began to practice with a group of five ascetics. For six years, Siddhartha practiced. The intensity of his practice were so amazing, the five ascetics became followers of Siddhartha. But the answers to his questions were still not being answered. He gathered together his efforts again and started refusing food and water, until he was in a state of near death. One day, a peasant girl named Sujata saw this starving monk and took pity on him. She begged him to eat some of her milk-rice. Siddhartha then realized that these extreme practices were leading him nowhere, that in all acutality it might be better to find some middle way between the extreme poverty of the life and the luxury and the life. So he ate, and drank, and bathed in the river.
